Weekly Update: Oct. 3

Can you believe it is October already?! Where is the year going?

Thank you to all students and families that raised money for the Terry Fox walk! As a class we able to raise $140! Great job! On Friday afternoon, we enjoyed a lovely walk around the neighbourhood of WCMS- the weather was perfect!  This week, we have our first field trip on Thursday to West Winds Aviation and Stars Air Ambulance. Students need to remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a bag lunch. If you have not returned your permission form, please do so tomorrow.

On Friday, permission forms for Bible History class were sent home with students. This is an optional class for grade 6 students taught by local ministers. Please indicate if you do or do not want your child to participate and return as soon as possible. Tomorrow, our annual Fundscrip fundraiser sheets will be sent home with students. Collection dates are Oct. 5, Oct. 12, and Oct. 19. New this year: if you have a large dollar order, parents are encouraged to drop off the envelopes on the same Wednesday’s between 8-9:30am, at the table at the front of the school.

There is no school on Friday (prep day for teachers) and on Monday (Thanksgiving).   I hope everyone has a wonderful, restful thanksgiving weekend. I’m off to spend the weekend in Edmonton- hopefully shopping, eating some great food, and checking out the Oiler’s new arena.

Here’s what’s happening in 6Korver this week:

Brown Bag Share: Kale and Jacelyn (Tuesday) Samantha and Parker (Wednesday- changed from Thursday due to Field trip)

ELA: In Reader’s Workshop we will be setting specific reading goals for the year (such as: improving on a specific reading strategies, improving fluency, reading longer and more complex books). In Writer’s Workshop, we will be “bling-ing” up our bio poems this week and learning how adding adjectives, verbs, and similes can help us be more descriptive in our writing. We will also be looking at the difference between editing and revising. Many students are writing on their blogs at home- so this fantastic! If you haven’t had a chance to look at their kidblog, please do!

Math: Exit cards on place value will be handed back this week. Last week, we set up the xtra math program for students- this is a great option for students to practise their basic math facts online. It is free and can be accessed at home- please contact me if you would like your child’s log in information to practise at home.   Miss Harvey is covering factoring, multiples, prime and composite numbers this week.

Health: We had some fantastic conversations about multiple intelligences last week. Ask your child how they scored and how they learn best. We will be wrapping up our health unit this week by discussing how our differences contribute to a positive classroom and developing an action plan for a growth mindset.

Social Studies: Miss Harvey is covering a quick intro to geography- understanding equator, northern and southern hemisphere, prime meridian, latitude and longitude.

Art: Students started planning their independent art project- they can design/make anything as long as it included in the seven elements of art. They will start creating their projects on Tuesday.
